GRAMMY-nominated producer and pianist Haywyre is no stranger to the Wave stage. As a longtime collaborator, he’s known for his genre-defying compositions and electrifying live performances. Ahead of his return for the second show in his 2-show residency on Wave, we caught up with him to talk about his creative journey, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and what fans can expect from his performance in the metaverse.

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name’s Martin, and I make music under the name Haywyre. I’ve been producing and performing since I was 16, so it’s been half my life at this point. Which is wild to think about. It’s been a long road, but I’ve loved every step of it.

What’s the story behind the name Haywyre?

Back when I first started releasing music, I knew I wanted to do it under an alias. I bounced around a few ideas with some producer friends and landed on “Haywire”. We all thought it sounded cool. But then I found out there was already a band with that name. So I changed the “i” to a “y” and ran with it. For better or worse, it stuck.

Was there a moment when you knew music was what you were meant to do?

Not one specific moment. It was more like a series of moments strung together throughout my life. I grew up in a very creative household. My dad’s a pianist, and both my parents are passionate about the arts, especially painting and music. But they never pressured me to pursue it professionally. I think I just gradually felt more drawn to it as a way to express myself.

Starting young really made a difference. It gave me time to build a deep connection to the craft, so by the time I was ready to pursue it seriously, I had a real sense of what that commitment meant.

What keeps you grounded and inspired, even during the tough moments?

Music has always been therapeutic for me. At its core, it’s about sharing ideas and curating experiences. That’s what keeps pulling me back in.

That said, I definitely hit some burnout at the end of last year while working on my album. I’ve spent the past few months slowing down, giving myself a bit of space. But even then, nothing else lights me up quite the same way. Of course, I have my partner, who I adore. But I also believe it’s important to have something that’s just yours. Your own goals, your own ambitions. For me, that’s music. There’s nothing else that gives me the kind of fulfillment it does.

You mentioned the album. What can fans expect from you in 2025?

Yeah, it’s kind of the elephant in the room for longtime fans since I’ve been teasing it for a while. I’ve released EPs, singles, remixes, but albums are a different beast. They require so much more time, energy, and intentionality.

This year, I’m really focused on finishing it. I’ve got no shortage of material, it’s almost the opposite problem. When you’re writing, singing, producing, mixing, mastering… wearing all the hats, it’s easy to lose perspective. You hear a song a hundred times and start asking yourself, “Does this even sound good anymore?” But I’m excited. I want to see it through.

Where do you find inspiration these days?

Honestly, in the small, everyday things. A good conversation. Doing chores. I know that sounds random, but that’s when I feel my creative brain kick into gear, when I’m not actively chasing ideas, but letting them come to me.

The key is recognizing those sparks and holding onto them before they slip away. When that happens, I try to drop everything else and focus on it.

Take us into your live performance process. How do you approach your shows?

It’s a strange process because I mimic in some ways what DJs do, but not in a live sense. It’s a mix of DJ-style set planning and traditional live performance. I don’t improvise the full set from scratch, there’s structure. But I do perform each song live on the keys, which adds a unique, in-the-moment feel to it.

I like organizing tracks in little clusters, based on mood, energy, BPM, key… then building a narrative from there. For the Wave shows specifically, I’m focusing only on Haywyre originals, which brings a cool sense of cohesion to the set.

How has it been performing in the metaverse with Wave? What can fans expect from your set?

It’s been amazing. I’ve been working with Wave for a long time now, and it’s crazy to see how much the platform has evolved. The creative possibilities are pretty limitless, which makes it incredibly fun to collaborate with the team and dream up what a show could look like.

This time around, I’m doing a special set of unreleased music. It’s surreal to say that out loud. But I’m excited to see what fans think of the new music.

When I’m in the Wave environment, seeing people’s usernames pop up and their avatars dancing around—it’s honestly energizing. It helps me lock in and perform like I would on a real-life stage. Sometimes it takes a minute or two to flip that switch, but once I’m in, I’m all in.

How does a platform like Wave help you connect with your audience differently?

The biggest thing is that not every fan can make it to a live show, especially when you’re not touring internationally every year. Wave gives people from all over the world a chance to connect in real time, and for independent artists like me, that’s huge.

It breaks down the barriers between artist and audience. You can literally see who’s in the crowd, interact with them, and create this shared space that feels intimate, even in a virtual world.

Catch Haywyre live in Wave on April 24 at 6PM PT as he debuts unreleased music live on Wave Beta. Sign up here for access.

In a world where 3D performances are becoming more common, Wave stands apart by delivering a truly live and immersive experience that redefines what it means to perform and attend a show in the virtual world. Unlike most virtual experiences that are pre-recorded or feature limited interactions, Wave delivers real-time performances that make it easier, fun, and more intuitive for performers and their audiences. Artists can instantly feel the energy of their audience, allowing them to react, adapt, and enhance their performance on the fly, resulting in a dynamic and fully live experience.

With the launch of our Beta, we’ve doubled down on the live experience with Wave Stage, an XR performance space designed to prioritize performer ease while leveraging advanced technology to enhance every aspect of the show, enabling artists to focus on what they do best—perform.

Wave Stage, located in our Los Angeles studio, is a fully integrated hardware and software solution that makes virtual performances feel as alive as any physical concert. The immersive setup features a massive 20-foot by 9-foot curved LED wall paired with a 10-foot by 10-foot LED floor, creating a surround visual experience that reflects the vibrancy of the virtual world in real time. The colors, lights, and dynamic effects of the show are synced to what the artist and audience experience in the moment, amplifying the performance’s energy.

Pro-grade audio equipment—premium microphones, preamps, and in-ear monitors—ensures that performers not only look their best but sound their best as well, allowing the audience to feel fully immersed in both sound and visuals.

Central to Wave Stage is bi-directional interactivity, a feature that fosters real-time communication between performers and audiences, making virtual shows feel more alive and engaging. Performers can see, hear, and feel their audience’s reactions in real time. Imagine an artist pausing mid-performance to answer fan questions, bringing a fan on stage for a live dance-off, or switching between different VR spaces to interact more intimately with smaller groups.

Our stage technology enables this level of interaction by compressing and synchronizing data in real time, ensuring that audience reactions—whether cheers, emotes, or messages—are instantly visible to the performer. This seamless exchange creates an atmosphere that feels more like a live concert than a digital broadcast, turning attendees into active participants.

Artists also have unparalleled real time control over their performances. Using MIDI controllers, foot pedals, or custom setups, performers can shape the experience as they go. They can sync musical elements with dynamic visual effects, alter lighting and soundscapes, or trigger dramatic shifts in the performance to match the energy of the moment. Artists can elevate their show into “Peak State” or overdrive mode, a feature that amplifies visuals and effects to create crescendos at the perfect moment.

At Wave, we’re reinventing what live performance means in the 3D space with our investment in Wave Stage. Through real-time interaction, immersive environments, and performer-driven controls, we’ve crafted an artist-first experience that empowers creators to connect with their audiences in entirely new ways – all in the moment, all live.

To check out Wave Stage in action, join our Closed Beta today at wavexr.com/waitlist.

We caught up with drum and bass DJ, producer, and label head Reid Speed ahead of her upcoming live set with Wave. As a longtime Wave collaborator, Reid reflects on her groundbreaking career in electronic music, shares valuable mentorship advice for the next generation of emerging DJs, and talks about her experiences performing on our platform.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a drum and bass music DJ originally from New York and now a longtime resident of Los Angeles. I produce, DJ, and own two record labels called Play Me Records and Play Me Too. I am also actively involved in fostering the next generation of drum and bass artists in the US.

Take us back to how you got started in New York City, in the late 90s.

I got started going to raves. I started shopping at a drum and bass store called Breakbeat Science when it first opened and ended up working there. This store was pretty amazing. It was America’s first drum and bass record store. I used to play music for people over the phone (before we could order stuff on the Internet). They would call on the phone and I’d play the records for them through the headphones and I started mailing my mixtapes to my customers, and that’s how I started getting bookings outside of New York.

In addition to being a DJ, you’re also a label boss. Tell us more about your label.

Around 2008, a friend named Marks of Sonic was doing well digitally and had a successful label. He came to me about starting a second label—he’d handle the business, and I’d do A&R. He didn’t stick around, so my husband and I kept it going. For the first five years, we did everything ourselves—artwork, mastering, finding artists. We got lucky as dubstep was breaking through in North America, and we became one of the top dubstep labels here. We also focused on a multi-genre approach, including drumstep, trap, twerk, and moombahton. We put out some of the first records by artists who became big, like Dillon Francis, Must Die, and Eliminate. One of our artists, SSKWAN, just signed with WME and Skellytn, just signed with Redlight/ UTA, and seeing the next generation take the torch is a full-circle moment.

Mentoring the next generation of electronic music talent is important to you – tell us more.

My goal with the label has always been to help artists succeed and ideally make a living from their art, so they don’t have to work jobs they don’t love. While I sometimes wish we could be the ones to bring them greater success, I’ve realized that our strength is in discovering talent early and helping them bring their vision to life. The most rewarding part for me is using our connections to help young artists achieve their dreams in music.

What’s your experience been like working with Wave and performing live in the metaverse? What standout moments can fans expect in your Wave set today?

It’s incredible to transport everyone to an alternate realm—I really love that. From the first time I wore the mocap suit, which was cool but limited, I’ve seen so many changes. Now we have advanced mocap technology and more interactive features that I’m excited to unleash for the crowd. It’s come a long way since we last did this, and I’m thrilled to do the show with you all. I also loved the creative names you came up with—like the “light speed tunnel” or when we’re “beamed up by the aliens.” I’m definitely partial to the UFO beaming us up—it takes us right to the bass station, my favorite place to be.

How does an IRL live set compare to a metaverse set?

I just love playing music—it’s a cathartic co-creation with whoever’s there with me. Even when I’m separated from the audience, I enjoy the interactivity of the metaverse or a livestream setting. For me, it’s like I’m just a vessel, and the music speaks through me. It just comes through me and tells me what needs to happen and that comes from the energy from the crowd, from the audience, from who’s out there, like we build the thing together, we build the vibe, and we take the journey together. Each experience is unique and shaped by who’s there with me.

Today is a unique kind of set that you’re doing. Tell tell tell the people what that’s about.

I’m gonna do an all Play Records set. It’s like the first set I’ve ever done that’s only music from my own record label – some of the best stuff that we have right now, and this is very unique for me, and I’m really excited to do this, but I’ve never done it like this before. I feel like that hits at the heart of something that Wave is really trying to achieve where we want to be a platform for the next generation and for every kind of artist. There’s a synergy with the passion I feel for this.

Alright, some quick fire questions. Drum and bass or Jungle? Jungle.

Festival stage or Virtual reality set?  Are you allowed to say both? Can I say underground? Yeah. Underground.

Twitch stream or Live DJ set? Live DJ set.

Classic vinyl or Digital decks? Digital decks.

Digital crowd energy or Personal focus? Digital crowd energy.

Backstage networking or Fan interactions? Fan interactions

New York City underground rave scene or LA festival scene? New York City underground.

Club nights are music production sessions? Production sessions.

We’re excited to announce that Wave’s new platform will launch in Closed Beta on October 17, 2024. This is more than a milestone—it’s the culmination of years of R&D, iteration, and re-imagining live entertainment. With this launch, we open a new chapter, welcoming creators and fans to a next-generation 3D entertainment destination.

Wave was founded by musicians with a deep passion for merging music, game engines, and XR technology. From the start, our goal wasn’t just to replicate virtual concerts. We wanted to empower artists to elevate their performances in ways only possible through our platform.

At Wave, we love being on the bleeding edge. Seven years ago, we embraced VR in its infancy and realized we were creating something unique. Our “Waves” were more than just virtual concerts – they were live, transformative experiences that fostered energy and presence. The real-time togetherness of our shows deepened connections, sparked creativity, and offered people a space to unite through music. Beyond entertainment, Waves are about community, expression, and belonging.

Our early vision resonated with artists like Imogen Heap, Glitch Mob, Lindsey Stirling, and Galantis who recognized the potential of VR and immersive performance environments as powerful tools for expression. Their belief in what we were building fueled our drive to think even bigger.

As we grew, we listened to feedback from artists, fans, and our community. Their insights led us to explore new mediums and expand beyond VR. We created interactive shows on 2D social platforms such as TikTok and worked with global artists like The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, and Calvin Harris. Along the way, we made pivots, recognizing that living in the future while operating a business is a unique challenge for startups.

Now, we’re bringing together all the pieces to create a 24/7 live entertainment hub in the metaverse – like a virtual music festival that never sleeps. Whether on mobile, streaming 2D, or fully immersed in 3D VR, our platform welcomes you. We’re especially excited to return to VR, where new tech advancements and our expertise will unlock deeper immersion.

Creating immersive 3D entertainment is still complex and costly, limited to a small group of creators. Wave’s long-term product roadmap is committed to developing tools that simplify 3D content creation and democratize show development to serve artists of all sizes – from emerging to established. We’re starting with music, but our vision will expand to include other formats like comedy, sports, talk shows, and more.

Our Closed Beta introduces several updates that enhance the experience for consumers and artists, marking just the beginning of the exciting developments to come:

  • Expanded accessibility: We’ll have multi-platform access so consumers can engage how and where they want. We’re starting with VR and 2D social streaming, with plans to add more endpoints in the future.
  • Improved graphics and performance: Our investment in Unreal Engine unlocks next-level visual fidelity and seamless performance, enabling richer, more interactive, and immersive show experiences.
  • Better artist experience: We’ve created Wave Stage in Culver City, a welcoming and immersive studio performance space designed to capture the energy of a live show and enable bi-directional interaction between the performer and their audience.
  • Faster, more efficient show production: We’ve upgraded our content creation tools to streamline the process, enabling quicker, more cost-effective show production so we can deliver more shows, more often.
  • Resources to empower creators: We’re partnering with a diverse group of Beta creators, equipping them with the tools and best practices they need to experiment, innovate, and drive our format forward over time.

We look forward to welcoming early users into our Closed Beta to preview what’s ahead and gather feedback to improve our platform. If you haven’t already, join our waitlist to get access to our Closed Beta. Let’s go!
